Sioux braves gained great honor in taking part in warfare. Counting coup (the touching of an enemy) was a honorable achievement. It wasn't the killing of an enemy, but getting so close to him that he could touch him which was proof of his bravery. Also warfare was for gaining horses and food for wealth and staying alive. Also, one had to protect his family and village against raiding enemy tribes. So, that is why Sioux warriors took part in warfare.

the Americans as well as the American government wanted the land from the Native Americans. the American people wanted it because they measure prosperity and wealth by land, unlike the native Americans. the railroads also influenced the governments policy towards the native Americans. in 1834, the US government passed an act that designated that entire great plains as one enormous reservation (land set aside for NA)then again in 1850, the government changed its policy to open up more land for the whites. they began signing treaties and created definite boundaries for each tribe. the Native Americans, however, did not agree to sign any treaty with the government. this led to tragic results.... WAR!

also, keep in mind that American wanted to get to California and Colorado because of the gold! California in 1849 and Colorado in 1858

As was generally true of all Native American populations before the arrival of European settlers, the Sioux fought their traditional enemies primarily for the right to hunt on favored areas of local terrain. In addition, conflict between the Sioux and other tribes was often motivated by pride or glory-seeking, with especially younger members of the involved tribes seeking to demonstrate their prowess in battle for the sake of recognition by their peers.

In a treaty from 1869, it was stated that the area was sacred ground, belonging to the Indians. But as gold was found, the whites didn't honor this. Although offer of sale was made by the local Indians, the government found the price too steep. Moreover, notorious Indian chief, Sitting Bull, bore a grudge against the whites, and would not accept a sale at any price.
