· Throughout Nicaraguan history the US has been involved in Nicaragua politics, economics, and military, some of which I learned during my trip to Nicaragua

· 1850 The US and Great Brittan signed a treaty that let the two countries have access to an inter-oceanic trade through Nicaragua without Nicaragua's consent 29 years after it gained independence from Spain.

· 1855 William Walker, who was a US citizen, captured the capital city at the time Granada and declared himself President.

· 1912-1933 US marines occupied Nicaragua

· 1927-1933 Augusto Cesar Sandino started a guerrilla war against the Conservative regime and the US Military, he later became a national hero in Nicaragua

· 1933 The war forced US to leave the country, but before they left they set up the National Guard, which was a military and police force trained by Americans that was designed to be loyal to the US. Anastasio Somoza, who was a close friend of the American government, was put in charge.

· 1933 When Sandino went negotiate a cease-fire with Somoza, he was assassinated.

· 1937 Somoza, after getting rid of the former president, became president, and later a dictator.

· 1937-1980 Anastasio Somoza, then his son, then his son's brother ran the country. They were cruel and murdered their own people, yet the US supported them through eight administrations, both republic and democratic.

· 1973 An earthquake hit Nicaragua killing more than 5,000 people, 4 times the amount were injured, and 250,000 were dislocated. International aid especially from the US was sent; most of it was stolen and mishandled by Somoza. He also refused to rebuild the capital city of Managua. This did cause him to lose support, though.

· 1979 The Somoza rule ended when the Sandinista (party named after Sandino) guerillas won the revolutionary war and took power.

· 1980s all-out-war sponsored by the US was waged against the revolutionists (US feared them because of their socialist ways) The US also funded the rebels, illegally mined a harbor, and taught rebels terror tactics.

· 1981 and throughout his administration, Reagan let the CIA have their paramilitary officers begin financing, arming, and training rebels, some of whom were from Somoza's national guard, who called themselves the Contras. This was the first time the US was not for the revolutionists. The US also put in place a full trade embargo on the Sandinistas and Nicaragua.

· 1983 Despite the embargo the Reagan administration continued to back the Contras, by secretly selling arms to Iran and using the money to help the Contras. The general public was enlightened when a plane carrying involved documents crashed and the document were later discovered. Bush Senor later pardoned all of the people involved.

· 1990 a new party UNO was created to oppose the Sandinista popularity. The US gave the people in Nicaragua two choices, wither they vote for UNO or the war that began in the 80s would continue. UNO won the election and the war stopped.

· 1996 The National Security Archive and other investigators found several documents that showed that White House official knew about and supported using money from drug trafficking to fund the Contras.

· Today Luckily for me the people in Nicaragua hold no grudges against the people in the US, just the government. The people that I have talked to are very excited by the election of president Obama and hope that he can help their poor country and their lives.

The GOP wanted to flex their muscle? Because some GOP members had secret arms deals with the old regime? Most likely the latter.

Although the GOP used Fox News and other news under its thumb to say it was helping the people, bull sh*t.
