From the perspective of the early sixties, the United States was at a point of high tension in our relations with the Soviet Union and Red China. One of the consequences of this tension was a tremendous respect (fear?) of anything communist.

When Vietnamese communist forces defeated French forces, the U.S. government was concerned that their Allie, South Vietnam, would fall to communism. As a member of the South East Asia Treaty Organization, the U.S. had promised to protect South Vietnam. U.S. forces were sent to South Vietnam to train their army.

When our troops began to face assaults from the North Vietnamese communist troops, more U.S. military assets were added to protect the trainers. This cycle continued to escalate until 1965, when entire divisions began arriving in South Vietnam to push communist forces back into the north.

Because of the concern over communist encroachment on other countries throughout the world, U.S. presidents were quick to use their military to stop that communist growth wherever they found it.
