The Soviets and US had declared war on Japan in WW2. Korea belonged to Japan. The Soviets (Russians) invaded North Korea, the US invaded South Korea. The Soviets held the north, the US held the south. The same occurred with Germany; the Soviets (Russians) invaded East Germany and the US/Allies invaded West Germany. The Soviets held East Germany, the US/Allies held West Germany...until the Berlin Wall fell in 1989.

when the North Koreans invaded South Korea the UN (particularly United States) came to the aid of South Korea. That is how the USA became involved. When the North Koreans were pushed back past the 38th parallel (almost to the Yulu River) China came to the North Koreans aid.

Towards the end of the Second World War, everyone knew that the Axis was going to be defeated (Germany and Japan included) The only real question would be -how to redraw the maps when the dust settled.

The "Western Allies" (Primarily the British Empire and the United States) were ideologically opposed to the growing communist world (The Soviet Union, China and other satellite states.) Following the war in the Pacific the US had a vested interest in both Pacific security, and preventing the Soviet/Chinese sphere of influence from expanding.

Korea was part of Japanese occupied territory, and when the Soviets/ US defeated Japan, they divided the country between them - a similar situation to East and West Germany. When North Korea (supported in material and training by the Soviet Union and China) invaded the South, and began to seriously pound them, the US stepped in.

In addition to these US motivations, the United Nations more or less said 'if one of us is attacked, you fight the rest of us'. This is why so many nations were involved in the Korean War, fighting for the South - including many European and British Affiliated (Canadian, Australian, New Zealander et cetera) nations. However, the US, with their occupying troops in Japan, were there from the beginning.

Why did the US invade the Korean peninsula?

To restore South Korea after it had been invaded by North Korea. The US invaded Korea twice. The first time was in 1945 when the US and the USSR agreed to invade the Korean Peninsula to defeat the ruling Japanese. The USSR invaded from the north and, as agreed, stopped at the 38th parallel. The US invaded from the south and stopped at the same line. The second time, in 1950, the US only invaded North Korea. The Republic of Korea (South Korea) requested US assistance, so when the US entered South Korea it was by invitation, not invasion. The invasion of North Korea was part of the objective of eliminating the North Korean ability to effectively re-invade South Korea.

Why are North Korea and South Korea divided?

It all started after WWII when Russia and the US chose what to do with Korea. They divided it by the 38th parallel, North going to Soviet Russia (communist) and South going to the US (democracy). This led to the division of the country and government.

Why is it that Russia has so many nukes but if North Korea had a single nuke US would attack?

1) The US and Russia are for the most part no longer "enemies". 2) North Korea is very likely to use any possible nuclear technology against South Korea, which is a US ally; I don't think Russia wants to attack South Korea. 3) As I said earlier, Russia is not likely to attack the US, North Korea is.
