Since the United States began in an activist manner, it became common for reform movements to start. The Constitution allows for freedom of expression of ideas, even radical ones.

What launched Dorothea Dix toward her reforming career?
Dorothea Dix was motivated to a life of reform by the year she spent in the UK with the Rathbone family. There, she was exposed to a variety of British reform movements, and saw how they handled their mentally insane citizens. She brought this knowledge back to the US and set about advocating for mental institutions for sick patients in New Jersey.
