They were mechanically inclined anyway, and ran a bicycle factory and were fascinated with flight since childhood when their father gave them a flying model. They could see flight was going to be a big thing and worked hard to get in on it.

Because!... They needed to find a faster, safer, traffic congestive free way of getting from one place to the other on time and hassle free.

Not to mention, also in travelling longer distances in shorter time.

The Wright brothers flew the first powered, human controlled flight that was given major publicity. Many people were building and flying different machines to try and prove the uses and value of flight. You could say the Wrights made huge improvements to flight control - but it was NOT the 'first airplane' -far from it.

The Wright brothers did NOT invent or build the first airplane. -Many others had built an flown airplanes for short distances before them, mostly ending in crashes. The Wrights fame came from building and flying the first practical, powered airplane. -There is a big difference.
