Britain did not supprt the Southern states during the Civil War. The south thought that since they supplied about 75% of Britains cotton supply that Britain would be forced to help them but Britain decided they would not support North or South and stay neutral!

England had been involved in the cotton imports for years, and thought that would bring them into their fold. England created a cheaper and better product in Egypt.
The South expected British help because Britain benefited greatly from the cotton trade with the South. The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865.
