To get to Asia from Europe one had to sail round the horn of Africa. This was a long way, a dangerous voyage and expensive.

However there was a hope that one could get to Asia by sailing the other way round the world and that this would be a shorter better rout. What was not realized was that the world was much bigger than they thought and that America was in the way.

The Europeans searched for a sea route because the route over land was long and dangerous and covered thousands of miles. The sea provided a steady, reasonably fast route, without holding up merchants by means of various obstacles. Wild landscapes, a lack of roads, rough terrain, mountains that blocked the way, highwaymen and more were all no problem when going over sea. All those factors were blocked out by going by ship.Also, a ship could contain a lot of cargo, and that is the reason they wanted to get to the east in the first place. All sorts of rare products, mainly spices, were imported from the orient to sell at home, such as cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg, ivory and so on. It was excellent business.

Unfortunately, disadvantages were also present. Threats like pirates, storms and mutiny were serious, but were taken for granted in the light of the benefits of travelling over sea.
