Elizabeth was married to her country and didn't want a man's help because she thought that he would try to become king and over power her. So she told everyone that she was married to her country.

Elizabeth I of England had been allowing people such as Sir Francis Drake to take down Spanish ships that transported Spain wealth. Phillip II did not like these 'Pirates' so he wanted them to be stopped and restore his wealth. This is partly what lead to the Spanish Armada. Another reason for wanting to overthrow Elizabeth was because she was Protestant and he was Catholic and own many lands around Europe and the New World that he had made Catholic. He disliked that England was Protestant when he had land such as the Spanish Netherlands and wealth transported near England. Elizabeth had helped the Dutch Protestant Rebelswhich Phillip saw as provocation.
