The stamp act happened because the British Parliament decided it would be an effective way to raise money. They would use the stamp act to level direct taxes on the American Citizens.
The colonist were not being recognized in parliament and no longer lived in England...........basicly the wanted a better goverment. The King was unfairly taxing the colonist which meant that they were loosing money to the king and becoming poorer.
The Sugar Act placed a tax on a product coming into the colonies. It was a custom duty, a form of tax used to regulate trade. The colonists always acknowledged Parliament's right to enact custom duties, external taxes. The Stamp Act created a direct tax, an internal tax. It was not intended to regulate trade, but to raise money. It was a direct tax placed on a product and the consumer knew that he/she was paying that tax. The colonists claimed Parliament did not have the right to enact direct taxes because the colonists were not represented in Parliament. They felt he was untrustworthy because they approved the Declaratory Act the same day.
The Stamp Act directly affected the colonists; taxes prior to the Stamp Act were indirect taxes, paid only by merchants.
the act lowered the taxes of molasses imported by the colonist
Sugar Act was passed through Parliament. The Sugar Act put taxes on Coffee, sugar, indigo, and molasses. In 1765 Parliament passed another tax.Stamp Act placed taxes on legal papers, advertisements, newspapers, almanacs, calendars, and playing cards. All of these had to bear a stamp showing that the tax had been paid. Even newspaper owners had to purchase the stamps for publications! Not surprisingly, the Stamp Act was unpopular & angered the American colonists.:))
Parliament passed the measures such as the Sugar and Stamp Acts because they thought the Colonists would pay the tax without argument. This proved to be their undoing, however, when the Colonists refused to pay the taxes.
