The Black Death was caused by bacteria carried by rats and their fleas. It spread quickly because rats lived in ships that traveled from one port to the next, and so the plague was carried across Europe in that way. Inland communications were often carried on by ships on rivers, so the plague spread up rivers quickly, as well.

The plague spread more slowly in areas without sea or river traffic. There were a very few places it did not reach at all. But most places in Europe are not far from water ports of one kind or another.

Also known as the Bubonic Plague the black death was spread by fleas that lived on rats and at that time rats where everywhere. Rats do not have collar bones so the can fit just about anywhere from ones basement to the attic. On top of that the rats (like mice) can become pregnant with in days some times hours after having 1 to 8 babies.

On top of that was poor living conditions, poor hygiene/ cleanliness, and the abilities for the rats to travel via ships, market carts, etc.

No one knew about bacteria and germs and how to stop them, so they spread from one person to another, completely unnoticed. Also, the rats carried them.

People didn't know what caused it and had no real way to stop it. Wherever people and animals were crowed together (which was all over Europe) the Plague could spread easily.
