The first European people who settled in Plymouth in Massachusetts were predominately Pilgrims. They ventured to the New World in order to practice their type of Protestantism without interference from the British government. They first went to the Netherlands, but felt out of place and finding jobs was difficult. They obtained a charter to settle in North America, but landed hundreds of miles north of their destination.

The religious group called the Pilgrims left Great Britain because their religion was persecuted by the official Church of England. Pilgrims were punished for practicing their faith. They sought and received a charter from Britain to make a colony in the New World and came to Plymouth due to bad navigation. Nevertheless they settled there in an area where the state of Massachusetts is now.
