Vietnam (a country within Indochina) was a French colony (just as the United States had been a colony of Great Britain). During WWII, Japan occupied French Indochina. When Japan surrendered, ending WWII; France returned to her former colony. Vietnam resisted the move, and war ensued from 1946 until 1954.

∙ 13y agoCommunist North Vietnam was trying to conquer South Vietnam via infiltration (guerrilla warfare in South Vietnam). In 1964, elements of the North Viet Navy attacked the US Navy on the high seas in the Tonkin Gulf; this created direct war (direct conflict) between the US and North Vietnam.
Basically Vietnam consisted of two wars: A guerrilla war from 1955 to 1964 taking place openly only in South VN. A conventional war from 1964 to 1975 taking place openly in North & South Vietnam.

After WW II the Americans were afraid of the communist influence of the vietminh and decided that backing the French rule was a better decision wich could be adapted to a freely elected pro US form of government .
