I don't know if I'm exactly right but i think it was created so that loved ones can show their passion and gratitude for each other.And show that they cared anyways. It's almost like a way to prove you love you bf or gf or wife or husband.

Hmmm...... well let's see it was made because you want to tell that special person you've been wanting to tell your whole life that you like them or you love very much and buy them something really special like a ring for marriage or something or like a card or teddy bear telling them you like them that kinda stuff. Mabye they just wanted to make that person feel magical and special it's the day you are sure you fall in love or you like someone and it's the best time to tell them. Hope this helped. :]
