John 5:39 tells us that they were so in love with the law and the Scriptures that they searched them hoping for eternal life there. They thought doing all the right stuff and keeping the law perfectly (which is of course impossible) would merit them eternal life. All the while they missed who these Scriptures were talking about. The Lord Jesus!!! They tended to focus on the external deeds while overlooking what God is really concerned about, the heart. (Matthew 23:25-26)
At the time, there were a lot of strange customs that had evolved in the Jewish faith. Jesus preached against these customs, and he often accused the pharisees of heresy and sin. In addition, he was considered a cultist/heretic and a threat to the pharisees power, so they did not like Jesus or appreciate his presence.
Jesus did like the Pharisees. God loves everyone. The Pharisees were very prayerful people, but sometimes they were not humble and bragged that they were better than the rest, which did not please Jesus.
Because they practiced the opposite of what they preached. In short, they committed grave sins while pretending to be good. Christ said- do all theat the pharaisees tell you to do but do not do what they do.
In Matthew ch.23 Jesus is recorded pronouncing his judgement on the Pharisees and scribes, seven times He repeats the exactly same phrase "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!"(v.13, 14, 15, 23, 25, 27, 29) There you can read all the details of their evil, but hypocrisy is by far, one thing which Jesus hates most, and Him repeating it seven times means that He hates it with perfect hatred. It is also worth noting, that never in any of the gospels is there any record of Jesus condemning prostitutes, tax collectors, drunkards or any "sinners", He is always seen to be patient and gentle with all sorts of social misfits, the only time He seems angry and using harsh language is with the religious people, this should be a solemn warning to all the "good" churchgoing folk, let us all examine our own hearts whether we really know Him, have a true relationship with Him or it is just a religion, a set of do's and don't's, do you truly love Him because you know that your sins are forgiven and the dreadful weight of guilt has been lifted off you, or is He just an ideal that you try to follow?
Luke 5:30-32 "But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
He disagreed with their teachings, so of course they didn't like that, and they also thought he was blaspheming. (Which of course he wasn't.)
The pharasees and other people hated Jesus because they think that He's spreading rumours that He is the Son of God. They also hated Him because many people followed Him and not the pharasees.
Jesus was loved by many people. It was the priests and Pharasees that wanted to get rid of Him.
They were the pharasees.
