American President, Woodrow Wilson, believed that the Treaty was too harsh. The 'Fourteen Points' he had drawn up (which were to be the foundations for a fair and just Treaty) were almost entirely omitted from the final Treaty, and Wilson believed that Germany - which had recently undergone revolution - needed to gain stability and establish its new government.
Actually, Why the U.S. government refused to sign the treaty.
4 Main points
-U.S. republican party was against anything the Democratic President Wilson tried to do. Since the Republican party ran most of the Senate at the time the voting was unfair.
-Senator Lodge started groups against Wilson and his pro-treaty beliefs.
- American people's popular opinion was that if we signed the treaty we would join the League of Nations which Wilson fought so hard to gain in the treaty. But the word "advise" was taken more as an obligation on what the country should do instead of ideas.
- Wilson's stroke really knocked him out of his political momentum he was building towards.
US senate after the elections of 1918 was controlled by Republican party. However, even the GOP was divided over the treaty and it was not possible to build a two third majority in favor of bill to carryout ratification of the treaty.
Many say Wilson's stubborness was the main cause for the failure of the Treaty.
Wilson said yes, others said no to the Treaty of Versailles since they did not want the US involved in the League of Nations and to be pulled into other world conflicts. The country had just come out of the war and was very much in isolationist mode. The general feeling in America was that if we signed the treaty and agreed to enter the League of Nations, then the country would be pulled into all future European conflicts.
This question is so political it is almost unfair. At the time the US President, Woodrow Wilson was speaking in France with the other Nations leaders, there was a Democratic Senate. The Senate is the part of Congress who ratifies treaties for the United States. When Wilson came back with the treaty he met some problems. The Senate had just been revoted and it was now a majority of Republicans- and they did not support the treaty. Wilson presented the treaty and it was rejected. The United States instead created a seperate treaty with Germany.
Isolationists wanted the United States to stay out of world affairs, including the League of Nations.
