Depending on what camp they were in, American colonists were either anxious or reluctant to break their ties with Britain. Loyalists or Tories were determined to keep their relationship intact with Britain, they were most numerous in the South. Patriots, especially strong in the New England area, were all for a complete break with the British. The Neutrals, on the other hand, could see value on both sides of the issue. There were still strong familial ties with Great Britain and many liked King George III but felt Parliament was the problem.

∙ 14y agoThey considered themselves British and there really wasn't an American identity yet. Also, it is better hate something you know rather than to risk all for something you don't know. They were loyal to the king.

∙ 13y agoBritain didn't want Americans (colonist) to have freedom because of the king of course the king would rule his followers so British people (The Loyalist) followed what they said. Britain want other countries to trade and have money. The British always wanted to be on top of other countries. Britain thought if the colonist would stop trading they would lose the good trading stuff like crops from farmers
