Digestion allows the foods that we eat to be broken down into the nutrients that our body needs to function: simple carbohydrates, essential amino acids, fatty acids (glycerols), and essential minerals. Most carbohydrates that we eat are complex carbohydrates that our body cannot use unless they are broken down. Digestion is the process that breaks down such complex carbs into simple carbs useful to our body. We eat proteins but amino acids are the building blocks for such proteins, and amino acids are essential for the functioning of our body. Digestion breaks down the protein into amino acids that our body can use.

The digestive system is necessary because you need to digest the food and get the energy (and other things your body craves) from the food you eat. Your body needs to break the food down and either use or store the materials.
