Why do Americans think british people are posh?
Because of the way that they are portrayed in films and television programs.
I don't know, but I am British myself and some parts of Britain have quite posh accents, compared to Americans.
They don't. While it's true that some Americans think BBC English is posh, most understand (correctly) that there is no class difference between the two dialects.

Possibly because the most famous British people are the royal family, all of whom speak with very posh accents. The same is true of politicians such as Tony Blair and David Cameron. Also, films and TV tend to focus on London and the south of England, again where accents are seen as more upper-class than in the north of England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
"POSH" refers to the days of the British Raj, when rich people would take the boat to and from India. They booked the best "coolest" cabins which were on the Port side on the way Out to India and the Starboard side on the way Home. Thus: POSH = Port side Out, Starboard side Home Now used to denote rich people that do things in the propper manner.

I heard that the word Posh originated as the description of a cabin on an ocean liner. Port Out Starboard Home. A: It is not a funny accent so much as it is a clear and proper way of talking that has been taught. Answer: The question is subjective. To "posh" people, so called "common people" speak in a funny accent as well.
It's not actually known. The "common" belief is from the ocean faring part of the British Empire where rich people paid to get the cabins on the port side when travelling to India and the starboard cabins on the way home, so as not to get "too" much sun (Which was not on, as a "rich" person wasn't supposed to be "brown" or "tanned"). It's an interesting thought but more than likely an advertising slogan… Read More

Probably because the only contact most American people have with English people is via the medium of television and films, where those particular accents stand out or are commonly used to portray 'typical' English people. because in TV, especially in cartoons like the Simpsons, English people are portrayed as either posh or cockney, when, in reality, most English people aren't actually like that.
