The first mass migration of Jews out of Germany was triggered by the Crusades. As armies began to march from northern Europe to free Jerusalem from the "infidels", they noticed that there were "infidels" closer to home, specifically the Jews of the Rhineland. So they slaughtered them. The Catholic church tried to intervene, but with little effect. The result was the worst slaughter of Jews between the time of the Emperor Hadrian and the Holocaust, and a wave of Jewish refugees fled east into Poland. During the 1930s, after Germany passed the Nurnberg laws, another wave of Jewish refugees fled. East into Poland, south into Austria, and West into France, England and America. America made it very difficult, and many other countries were not very welcoming either because of the huge wave of Jewish refugees that had just fled Russia between 1880 and 1930.
