Hindus believe in the soul being indestructible; and that death symbolises end of the existence of a person's physical being, but the start of a new journey for the soul. This soul then reincarnates in some other life form, and passes through the same cycle of taking birth, growing and eventually meeting death- only to begin the cycle afresh.

Cremation of a person's dead body is therefore, supposed to rid the departed soul of any attachments to the body it previously resided in.

Also, a traditional belief among Hindus says that a person's body is composed of 5 elements- earth, fire, water, air and sky. The cremation ceremonies of Hindus are directed towards returning the body to these elements. The body is progressively returned to earth, air, sky and fire by burning it under skies; and the ashes are respectfully collected and poured in a river.

It is said that excessive mourning over a deceased prevents the soul from being completely detached from its loved ones, and keeps it from undertaking its new journey- that of taking up a new life. Cremation (and subsequent ceremonies in mourning) help to remove most of those things that can act as a reminder for the person's existence, and thereby also assist the family in getting over the loss.

Besides Hindus many cultures and individuals prefer cremation then being buried as it was believed back then that if the person's soul is removed from the body then what is the point in still treasuring that body. It was not the body that friends and family liked about that person who died it was the person's soul and personality that made them who they used to be and if that soul no longer existed then why keep the body. Again like most questions this question too is all about perspective and what people believe, accordingly to their religion.

" Note that the Hindus originally started the practice of cremating their dead for several reasons. They did not want to leave dead bodies around to be consumed by vultures. Such a sight could be very traumatic . especially to the family of the deceased. Hindus also had a reverence for their dead and wanted to maintain sanctity of the corpse against attacks from savages. They did not therefore follow the practice of leaving their dead to the vultures. Cremation was also preferable to burying the dead. A grave or burial site would require a piece of land, which had to be in a good, safe and secure location. Moreover, if the practice of burying the dead had been prevalent, huge areas of good territory would be lost as graves. During early days of civilization, digging a grave would be more difficult, laborious and time-consuming because of lack of proper tools. In comparison, cremation was easier and cheaper (needing no land), because everyone going to the crematorium to pay respects to the dead would simply carry some wood with him to add to the fire."

If logically considered, Human body if buried inside earth will take several years to decay and might bring some deadly infections to leaving people, so Hindu's burn the body.

If spiritually considered, Human soul is connected to body and once any person is dead, the soul comes out of the body but does not leave this world. They become ghost and never get mukti.
