Credit card companies charge a fee for every transaction with their card and American Express fees tend to be higher than those of Visa or MasterCard, so some businesses avoid American Express to avoid this charge. Also, some companies have complained of American Express unexpectedly terminating their contract, hoping the other company will agree to a new deal that favors American Express more. Some companies do not appreciate this and refuse to sign a new contract with American Express.
