Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum is responsible for detoxification (including alcohol) of foreign substances. The liver is responsible for most of your body's detoxification processes. Liver cells respond to the constant influx of alcohol by synthesizing more Smooth ER to try and cope with the increased presence of the toxic substance.

Because in the liver the smooth ER is where the detoxification systems are located. On the microsomes, systems like the P450 and others. When someone takes drugs, or alcohol the liver will increase the systems to reduce blood levels faster. This is why a person may develop a tolerance to a drug because the liver gears up and it is better at getting rid of the substance faster.

Alcoholis have more smooth ER because the smooth ER is where detoxification occurs. Since alcoholics consume more toxins than thos who don't drink, more ER is needed to keep the body alive.

Smooth ER, endoplasmic reticulum, does not have ribosomes, and Rough ER does.rough er is studded with ribosomes while smooth er is not.

How much smooth er is in a cell?

That depends on a cell. Since the smooth ER functions in detoxification and synthesis of lipid and carbohydrate, cells that are in livers will tend to have much more smooth ER concentration compared to a skin cell.

How can you tell rough ER from the smooth ER?

Rough ER has numerous ribosomes on its surface. These are absent on smooth ER. Smooth ER studded with ribosomes. Rough ER transport of materials.
