Spacespace is a vacuum so there is no oxygen to breathe, also the heat and cold extremes are too much for us to handle. The suit provides air, heat, cooling, all the things a human needs to survive. Answer

because with out them the astronauts would shrivle up and die.

AnswerMy guess: so that they are maximally visible outside of the [shuttle, ship, whatever].

NASA gives two reasons.

1. White reflects the light off of the astronauts suits keeping them cooler.

2. White also stands out against the dark backdrop of space so that other astronauts can spot them easily while they are outside working on the spacecraft etc.

This does not belong to NASA

1. so preparing for the mcat, I ran into a question about white astronauts wearing white, it mentioned the fact that while white reflects radiation better it also radiates less of it. I am not quite sure how this is supposed to keep the astronaut warm, does it also reflect the heat from the body back toward the skin and absorb less, while at the same time radiating less of what had been absorbed. ??

To provide them with air and temperature regulation.

The space suits protect them from the heat and cold of space, and provide air when they are not in the sealed environment of a spacecraft (such as when on spacewalks or walking on the Moon). If exposed to the vacuum of space, their bodies would suffer injury (possibly fatal) from decompression.

The suits also serve as pressure suits when they are experiencing high G-forces (takeoff and landing).

One of the problems of staying alive in space is managing heat. If you lose too much heat, you'll freeze. If you gain too much heat, you'll roast.

Space suits are excellent insulators; they don't allow much heat to escape. So you have to also avoid collecting too much heat from the Sun. A white exterior helps keep the suit from collecting too much heat.

It's like wearing white clothing in the summer; it keeps you from getting too hot.

The difference in suits are to tell other spce men/women which country they are from. If they are NASA space agents then they are in white and if the are from the USSR then they are in orange.

On an absolute scale, there's lots of oxygen in space. It's just not concentrated enough for you to breathe.

There really isn't a why. It's just the way things are. The average density of the universe is basically a coincidence; it happens to have the mass it does and the volume it does, and "why" is not really a question to which we have the answer, if there is in fact an answer.

Astronauts wear space masks in space because in space there is no air so they use an oxygen mask to breath.

There is no oxygen in space because space is a vacuum - the absence of matter, thus the absence of oxygen.

What do astronauts do before takeoff?

On launch day, astronauts usually wake up four hours before launch. They enjoy a pre-launch breakfast, then get suited up in their orange Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES) space suits. After they are suited up and ready to go, the astronauts walk out from the Operations at Checkout Building at the Kennedy Space Center and climb into the Astrovan, which takes them to the launch pad. At the pad, the astronauts ride an elevator to the 195-foot level, where the close-out crew helps each astronaut board and strap into the shuttle. After that, the astronauts wait about two and a half hours until launch.

What is the difference between the brighness and color of a star?

the brightness of a star usually means how close it is to earth and the colour means how hot it is. blue/white being the hottest and colours like red yellow and orange being not as hot.

Why do astronauts wear a special kind of clothing?

The astronauts spacesuits are a type of life support system to keep them alive when outside of the spacecraft. Then it supplies them with air, water, communications, cooling, waste disposal and anything else they need for survival in an environment in which it is impossible to live without it. The orange spacesuits worn by space shuttle astronauts during launch and re-entry provide air, communications and also prevents their blood from pooling in one part of the body causing faintness. Most of the time on the shuttle and the International Space Station, astronauts wear regular clothing and only need to use special suits for EVA and launch and re-entry procedures.
