It is because the mothers do not know how to take care of the baby, we are worry that the mother will hurt or accidentally kill her baby, therefore the baby is taken away for prevention.

How does a giant panda protect its young?

it doesn't. once it is old enough to leave the house, it is on its own.Baby giant pandas are extremely vulnerable to being carried away by birds, leopards, and other predators; therefore, giant panda mothers are very protective of their young. Mothers carry their babies around with them everywhere, and baby pandas stay with their mothers until they are three years old. (Sometimes they even continue living with their families after that time, but by that age, they are able to take care of themselves.)
