Male and female humans have the same anatomical structure of the anus (exit from the colon for solid wastes), but different configurations for the urethra (which carries liquid from the kidneys leaving the bladder).

In human females, the urethra exits the body just over the vagina, and has no accurate directional control of the urine stream. This often results in contact with the labia or skin surfaces and requires wiping. In males, the urethra travels through the penis, and the urine stream can be directed with some accuracy. In uncircumcised males, the urine may come in contact with the foreskin unless it is retracted. The reason for the anatomical difference is that the male urethra also carries semen from the testes during sexual intercourse.

The effect is that boys usually urinate in a standing position, while girls will either sit (toilet) or squat (other sanitary facilities), and girls are more likely to use tissues or cloths afterwards.

Except for metabolic differences that may result in changes to the lower bowel function (e.g. during pregnancy and menstruation), the male and female colons have no essential differences. Both sexes expel fecal matter in the same manner.
