We all know that there are only seven sacraments namely: Baptism, Holy Eucharist, Confirmation, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. Jesus Christ declares His Church which is the people. All Christian are familiar to these sacraments. It is part of our faithful tradition in which we praise and give Glory to God and his beloved Son. The sacraments were imparted to us by Christ. Christ determined that the seven sacraments He had set forth were all that was necessary in order to aid in the transmission of His grace and the salvation of souls through His Church. It is also the said requirement in order for us to complete our tasks and obligation in our own Christian life. Many Church Fathers read mystical symbolism and meaning in the number seven, however, these are extraneous to the fact.

.

Catholic AnswerThe answer above is pretty good, the short answer is that Our Blessed Lord gave them to us - all seven, no more, no less. So we have no authority on our own to do anything about that number, it is part of His Revelation.

If not for some sensible, no-nonsense types in the Vatican, there would probably be more! there are hundreds of ceremonials in the Roman ritual- that are not considered sacraments, but include blessings of such diverse objects as Seismographs ( the Jesuits do monitor earthquakes so this is not off-beam) In the middle ages there were what were called Pardons, for animals ! ( despite the theological angle that animals do not know or commit sin, being animals and not humans with souls). Presently there are seven sacraments, but one adds, there are hundreds of differnt types of Masses alone- look at a missalette. It used to be argued that Communion and Confirmation used the same missal with a diferent warhead! they are separate sacraments but the confirmation rite is similar structurally to a mass up to the end and has s different sacramental payload- confirmation rather than the Eucharist, attached, so it is not, strictly speaking , a mass. There are different forms or Nuptial masses, also ( weddings).

Roman Catholic AnswerBecause these are the seven sacraments given to us by Our Blessed Savior to help us work out our salvation and to grow closer to Him. Because they are given to us by God, and commanded by God.

I'm not sure if I understand your question. A sacrament is an outward sign of an inward grace, except the Blessed Eucharist which is the Body and Blood of our Blessed Lord. The first sacrament is Baptism, which anyone can receive; and, for that matter, can be administered by anyone (in an emergency). Baptism washes away originial sin and any actual sin; and makes one a child or God spiritually. None of the other Sacraments can be received without Baptism. The next Sacrament one would ordinarly receive is Reconciliation (Confession) which restores spiritual life by forgiving actual sins committed after Baptism.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Church celebrates the sacraments because Our Blessed Lord established the seven sacraments as the way to save us by giving us grace. They are something the Church has received and has no power to alter.

.

from

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

1114

"Adhering to the teaching of the Holy Scriptures, to the apostolic traditions, and to the consensus . . . of the Fathers," we profess that "the sacraments of the new law were . . . all instituted by Jesus Christ our Lord." (Council of Trent {1547}: Denzinger-Schönmetzer, Enchiridion Symbolorum, definitionum et declarationum de rebus fidei et morum {1965} 1600-1601)

1115

Jesus' words and actions during his hidden life and public ministry were already salvific, for they anticipated the power of his Paschal mystery. They announced and prepared what he was going to give the Church when all was accomplished. The mysteries of Christ's life are the foundations of what he would henceforth dispense in the sacraments, through the ministers of his Church, for "what was visible in our Savior has passed over into his mysteries." (St. Leo the Great, Sermo. 74, 2: J.P. Migne, ed., Patrologia Latina {Paris: 1841-1855} 54, 398)

Can a Roman Catholic woman and a Roman Catholic man receive the sacrament of matrimony in a Ukrainian Catholic church?

I'm not familiar with the standing of a Ukrainian Catholic Church in relationship to the Roman Catholic Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church, which it may be, is currently in a 'schism' with the Church in Rome. This word, schism, is important. Any such church simply means that the Roman Catholic Church does not consider them preaching the same set of truths. When a Roman Catholic individual marries, they have a moral obligation to be married in the Catholic church. Thus, they should be married by a Roman Catholic priest who is in union with the Church. However, as you might have heard, exceptions can be granted. The best advice is really one that your pastor will answer. I urge you to pay him a visit and discuss this important topic. God bless you!

What were the 7 sacraments of the roman catholic church that were central to medieval christian belief?

Catholic answerIt's just the Catholic Church, not the Roman Catholic Church. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is rarely used by the Catholic Church. .The seven sacraments are the same today as they were back then, and they have always been central to Christian belief, whether ancient, medieval, or modern:BaptismPenance (or Confession)ConfirmationHoly EucharistMatrimonyHoly OrdersAnointing (Extreme Unction)The Catholic Church further groups them in this way:-The Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist)-Sacraments of Healing (Penance/Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick)-Sacraments at the Service of Communion (Holy Matrimony and Holy Orders)
