Cats DO NOT need their nails clipped, to attempt to do this to a cat would be extremely cruel. Cats have retractable nails and thy maintain them by scratching at a scratching post or tree bark. Cats nails sharpen themselves by flaking as the cat scratches.

Cat's claws are sharp because they are used for hunting, and those cats who had claws that were less sharp, or had no claws, did not hunt as well as the sharper-clawed ones and so did not survive to reproduce. Dog's claws are also sharp, in the wild, though not as sharp, because they cannot be retracted, and so get dulled by the surfaces the dogs walk on.

Cats do not actually bite themselves. They chew on their fur to help clean it. A cat may get small pieces or mats in their fur or dead skin and they nibble to loosen them.

They grow sharp because of the design, hooked, and the simple fact that in the wild they are predators and the sharp nails are necessary to kill prey
