Doing so keeps the canine population under control. With many unwanted and neglected dogs, it's not nessecary to breed unless you are a responsible breeder or have a REALLY good reason.

It also helps a dog's behavior. This means that they are less likely to be aggressive or want to mate. This means that you wouldn't have to get your dog killed or euthanized (or you could call a dog trainer).

  • Cat overpopulation is a problem in much of the world.
  • If the tomcat is not neutered, he will most likely find a queen and mate with her, adding to the overpopulation problem.
  • Neutering makes the cat calmer and overall happier.
  • Neutering can reduce (if not eliminate completely) problems with urine marking
  • Neutering a cat will reduce the risk of some cancers.
  • Neutered cats are less likely to wander or escape from the house because they no longer need to find a mate.

Guide dogs are castrated for several reasons. The first being that guide dog agencies maintain their own breeding stock and don't usually need the dog for breeding purposes. Another reason is that the male hormones can make a dog difficult to deal with, more distractable and more interested in other dogs than doing its job. An unaltered male is prone to attack by other male dogs as a rival and is at risk of certain reproductive cancers and problems as they age. A blind individual does not need to be dealing with all of these potential problems and it is better for both the dog and the handler if the dog is altered.

This is not to say that all service dogs should or even must be altered because they don't have to be. It is just easier and safer to do so if there isn't a compelling reason for it not to be done. Some privately trained purebred service dogs are kept intact for possible breeding purposes or until their value for breeding can be ascertained. Many people believe that early altering is harmful to animals and will maintain their service dog unaltered until it is fully mature. Priority should go to the service work however If an intact service dog cannot do the job almost exactly as an altered dog would do it then they should be immediately altered or removed from service work.

Can neutering a 5 year old dog correct marking in the house?

If the dog is marking for sexual reasons, then it is possible that castration will stop him doing this. Unfortunately, many dogs initially mark for sexual (/territorial) reasons, but after a while the behaviour becomes learnt. Castration will stop innappropriate sexual behviour, but may not prevent urine marking (which may have become a learnt behaviour). Get advice from a professional behaviourist if castration doesn't help.
