What you are observing is the "pecking order" which is established starting within the first week of hatch. The older stronger birds will establish dominance over the younger weaker chicks. One way to help reduce this is to use red or blue light as a heat source in the brooder box. I also hang an old CD on a wire to use as a distraction ploy, the aggressive birds will see reflection from the moving CD and peck at the disc instead of the other birds. When there is a great difference in age and size it is always best to separate the birds into groups of similar age and weight but that is not always practical in a small area.

Hens peck, usually at any approaching animal while laying eggs and when they feel threatened. Roosters however, peck to establish dominance among others and to fight; although, roosters usually use their feet.

How do you get old chickens and a rooster to get along with baby chicks and a peekin duck?

The only way to accomplish this is to separate them until the chicks are old enough to stay out of harms way. Allowing the chicks to socialize with the flock can be done with a temporary cage, the chicks are protected yet among the older birds. All flocks of chickens have a pecking order and there is no way to safely stop this, the more grown up your chicks are, the better able to handle the pecking and chasing until peace reigns in the hen house.

Is it unhealthy for two roosters to live side by side where they can see each other but live alone so that they won't fight and how do you make roosters stop fighting?

Make Roosters Stop FightingIf you let them run in the yard, they will fight it out until they figure out who the strongest rooster is. After that, they will keep their space and mioght fight every so often, but it will not be very serious. Keeping them close to each other where they can see each other but not fight may actuly increase their hostility toward each other.Trying to stop roosters from fighting is like trying to stop them from crowing. It can not really be done. The kindest thing is to rehome one of the roosters to someone with a group of hens so he can have his own territoryhey...i have been breeding chickens for years now and i find that a fare bit of friction between roosters depends on breeds and circumstances. i used to have two roosters...they hated each other from the moment they saw each other. while another two figured out the pecking order and got along perfectly...in the same pen...with shared hens. i currently have three roosters...they grew up together and are inseparable. so it can be done but it cannot be forced. there is nothing you can do, just keep an eye on them and see how they get on. PoultryTalk's Answer:I raise gamefowl and you cant stop them from fighting, its in their instinct even though people lie and say it isn't. Dont believe me, get a few young baby chicks and raise em on the yard. Do whatever you want and they will still fight. Laying type chickens are easier to keep together. But still on occasion will fight.

Will our older rooster kill the younger rooster?

New chicks introduced into an established flock will often be harassed by all members of the flock. It can go on longer than a few days, and sometimes not be effective to introduce them to the old flock. The pecking order must be maintained therefore the new chicks get picked on. Try not bringing in chicks fresh from the brooder until they are large and fast enough to escape the bullies (that means AT LEAST the same size as the others in the coop). Y ou will often have more trouble from the older hens than you will from the rooster since usually a few more added to his harem makes no difference. If the momma hen is with them they stand a better chance of making it as she will try to guard them but since babies are curious they may wander into harms reach. It may be best if you simply hand-rear chicks that you hatch yourself (not with a broody) and then introduce them when they are old enough. This way the chances of you losing birds because of bullies decreases dramatically. It is possible for the old flock members to kill one of your new chicks.I suggest before introducing the chickens, get a washcloth. Find the chicken that is head of the pecking order. Rub the washcloth on their vent, then rub the cloth all over the chicks. This will help! Also, give them a few things to snack on so they aren't too focused on the chicks. And be sure to watch them! Fights will occur, but do not let them kill each other! if you have a breed that is just smaller than your old flock's, i suggest making a separate area for them. No matter what I did, my small silkies and dwarf silkie could not be integrated with the bigger hens.If your chicken is just young, I would wait till it got bigger to start moving them in. Make sure to keep an eye on them!

Why do hens peck at another hens head?

Usually, it's just because he is mating with the hen. The rooster will mate by standing on the hen's back and holding on to her neck feathers with his beak. Roosters usually don't actually attack hens.

How do you stop finch birds from pecking each other?

I use a bunch of strings knotted together to give birds something else to peck on. Many pet shops sell a "bird tranquilizer" which has fibers sticking out of a wooden bead. The strings work just as well.
