Well both a dead body and living one floats on top of water. But the more you panic, the faster you will sink. If you were to stay calm and relax, you will have no problem with floating on top of water....

this is because of density. Anything less dense than water will float and anything more dense than water will sink. Our bodies(YOU CAN BE 600LBS) have a density less than water....so we will definitely float.

so if u find yourself "drowning", just stay calm and let human nature take it's course:)

The organs in the lower body decay and fill with gas from the decay, which makes it float. The head and skull have no room for gas because they're filled with the brain, so they stay heavy and sink downward.

There are several factors involved in the floating sinking of a body (alive or dead):

Live body

People tend to have positive buoyancy when alive as their lungs are full of air. This makes a persons total density less than that of water. This made obvious by the fact that Scuba divers usually wear lead weights . A persons physical makeup can also influence this lower density - more fat, less overall density.

External to the body itself some folks carry a great deal of ballast (camera, coins, tool belts, heavy boots, outboard motor accidentally caught in clothing) which increase their average density and they sink.

Dead body

A dead body (at firat) floats or sinks the same as when the person was alive as nothing changed - density wise. However the lungs may fill with water either b a last gasp inhales water or by puncture wounds to the lungs (e.g. a car accident) This increases the density and the body sinks.

In crime movies the boy often is equipped with "concrete overshoes" or a convenient chunk of scrap iron to weigh them down,

Then comes the miracle of decomposition. Microbes eating the intestinal contents generate gas which is held in the intestines. This increase the buoyancy and the body rises up through the water.

As time goes on, leaks appear in the tissue holding the gases in (fish, crabs, wear and tear) and the gas escapes, increasing the average density and the body sinks for the final time.

dead bodies can't obiously move so they lay in a straight forward position. Only straight and accurate shapes can float. if u lie straight in water (u the living one) u would float 2

A body floats due to the gases left in the body, once the gases dissipate the body sinks until it produces more gas to float.

because when the dead body is dumped in water, slowly the body absorbs water and the density of the body and water becomes the same.but wheras living bodies is denser than liquid.

When something dies, gasses are released by the body. These gasses collect and cause the body to swell, and if the body is in the water, they cause it to float.

Why the dead body float on water?

Many gases produce in body of human. When the man die the water enter the human body and there is no way for air to diffuse out of the human body .As the gasesare lighter so they try to diffuse out of the water due to this the dead body floats on water

Why a man can float in a dead sea?

because it has so much salt in it that it enables the body to float instead of sinking in the water

Body of water contains so much salt that people can float on it?

The Dead Sea.

Why a dead body float with its head a merged in water?

Gases build up in a decomposing body in water and makes it float, but the head remains heavy and so tends to sink just below the water level.

Who will sink a dead body or an alive person?

Normally a body will sink if the person is dead and has no air in their lungs to keep the body boyant. Although after some time gases accumilate inside the body cavity due to decomposition and the body will float again.

Will dead body float in seawater?

Dead body(s) will float in seawater [at least dead animal body(s) do]. ... visualize that once the body begins to decompose bacterial gases will cause the body to float to the surface ... imagine that body(s) which end up in deep water (thereby very cold water) do not experience bacterial decomposition as quickly and consequently with limited light and oxygen any bodies in deep/cold water decompose and are consumed more slowly without floating to the surface due to bacterial gas expansion common to warm water ...

Does a dead sperm float in water?

Why do we float after death even though our weight is more than the body when we are alive?

Even though a body may be dead, with its heart stopped and the brain cells dead, the body's tissue continue to perform internal respiration which gives off carbon dioxide for some time after death and makes the body bloat so it is able to float.

Why a dead body rises up in water and a living person goes down water?

A dead body decomposes in water as the organs & cells absorb water. The decomposed body increases in volume weight to displace more water to float. A living body cannot displace water as the volume and tends to sink in water.

Why do most things float in the Dead Sea?

The Dead Sea is much saltier than other seas. The dissolved salt increases the density of the water, making it easier to float on.
