Dogs dig for a variety of reasons... Dogs will often dig out of boredom, Digging is often used as a means of escape, digging to find relief from the heat and some dog may dig to excavate a den. Some may also dig because that is how they did it in the wild the would agther leaves and dig in it to make it more comfrotable. A female dog may dig in order to provide a nest for babies, whether she is pregnant or not. Maybe if you cushion the dogs bed a bit more it would probably happen a bit less often.

I don't know if that answer really answered what you were asking, so here's my response:

Dog's dig before laying down to go to sleep because this is a primitive habit that they have not lost. If you think about it, dogs used to sleep outside all the time, on hard, sometimes itchy/grassy ground, so they would dig at it and what-not until it is comfortable to them. They do this now because it's like they're making a "nest" out of their sleeping area, the most comfortable and cozy place they can make, just like in the wild, except 100x better! It's kind of like fluffing your pillow before you go to bed, you just want the best of the best!

Dogs do that when it is hot out, it's part of the instincts. They do it so they can lie in it, because the ground is cooler down underneath the surface. Gardens are the easiest place to dig, and they know that. If that's not the case, do you ever give your dog bones and let her go outside with it? Dogs often bury a bone and then lose it, like a squirrel loses his nuts. Those are the most basic answers I can give you, as I usually get carried away and talk like a scientist when I am answering questions about dogs. I am an eleven year old dog genius and proud of it.

These are the three most common reasons:

1) If digging is found only at the base of a fence, the dog is trying to make an escape hole to get out from under the fence.

2) It is hiding a "treasure" (like a really good bone) to protect and return to later.

3) What seems like random digging is actually an instinctive action in some breeds nearer to the wolf. Dogs have extremely keen senses. In the wild, when food is scarce, wolves will dig for rodents, grubs, and other creatures that they sense moving underfoot. This instinct to dig remains in many dogs but usually only manifests when a dog is either underfed OR really bored from lack of things to do. It then takes on the form of a game to the dog.

Yes they can, but in my experience I've never seen a dog take a bone and go bury it in the backyard like in the Cartoons.

My dog burries everything. It really depends on the breed and your dogs personality. My dog even carries her food to the back yard, at times, and burries it.

It is an instinct they get from their ancestors the wolves. Wolves naturally dig to bury leftover scraps and that is what your dog is doing.
