we wear a full face mask to protect our breathing from toxic smoke and intense heat. when we are all "geared" up we have absolutely no skin showing. the mask is designed to allow a regulator (device that gives you low pressure air) to hook into it. the regulator comes from the SCBA that we wear on our back.
Firefighters wear breathing apparatus so that they don't breathe in smoke that will kill them or cause them great damage. It only takes a few minutes to be incapacitated by smoke. If they were to lose consciousness because of the smoke, then they could not save the lives of others and put out the fire.
Nearly any burning structure will collapse, or have collapsing (burning) parts. When firemen enter those structures, a helmet will afford some protection from falling debris.
Firefighter's helmets are most commonly yellow to represent the wearer's rank or position. The colour can also be used to represent a firefighter department.

Firemen wear breathing apparatus to protect themselves from harmful smoke, fumes, and toxins present in a fire. The apparatus provides them with a clean air supply so they can safely work in smoke-filled environments without risking smoke inhalation or respiratory damage.
