It covers the reflective surface of the glass base so the fish can orientate themselves more easily. It looks more natural so is more pleasing to the average eye. If deep enough, it provides an anchoring for plant roots.

Gravel is also an important place for beneficial bacteria in the tank to live. Beneficial bacteria help keep your tank clean by naturally filtering fish waste and food particles.

If you buy a fish buying gravel is not completely necessary. Gravel is used mostly for decoration. It might be a good idea, though, to purchase some under - water plants because they release ocsigen into the water. This helps your fish breathte and makes your tank/bowl look more interesting. Having gravel is a good idea because: It makes your tank look interesting, It keeps your fish entertained. (the fish can dig in it e.t.c) Having gravel is a bad idea because: It can be expensive, It makes the tank/bowl harder to clean.
