Many boys find it hard to communicate their thoughts and feelings to others. Often they are so concerned about how the other person will judge them that they avoid conversation all together.
It may also be that they don't feel like they have anything to contribute that would interest you.
I may also be that they don't care enough about you to bother with conversation, but the odds are good that it's just hard for them.
Generally guys outgrow this as they get older and become more experienced and more comfortable with their own self image. If they develop a healthy self-image, most people become more willing to risk the temporary disapproval that an honest conversation can cause.
