Why are people afraid to show their true feelings?

Males and Their FeelingsMany boys, as well as when they grow into men, are focused on other important things in life that when it comes time to exert time and energy on emotions find it troublesome and wasteful.

Although it may be healthy to release built up emotions (both good and bad), doing so may hinder one's social status, friendships, and personal self worth.

Unwritten RulesThe moments of showing feelings should be limited to no more than one time per day and in the privacy of the home. In addition, it should also be during a time when energy is abundant and not when it is time for bed, or before an activity, or during a sporting event.

When asking "How do you feel about..." or any other rendition of the question related to feelings must not be asked in such a way that it can be answered incorrectly my the boy or man.

Suitable times periods for discussing feelings must be limited to 5 minutes, with the acceptable extension of an additional 20 minutes when a death in the family has occurred.

When asking about feelings, the topic must be only asked once, and only once. There is no indefinite time period for this rule. For example, if the topic is regarding a troublesome experience while driving, this may never be discussed again. Once the feeling are expressed, this topic is closed. The acception to this rule if that the boy, or man, may decide to open the topic for discussion again.

It all depends on the guy and occasion. I'm a 18 year old guy who gets a tuff time opening to women because I've had terrible brack ups when a girl who I really like dumps me and after that I feel that if I open up emotionaly to a girl I feel vonarable and fragile, afrid to be hurt again by a girl or woman I like. It's pretty hard for us guys to say the truth about there feelings and emotions cause deeply when we feel and emotion we feel fragile to an exposer to a terrible feelings like; sadness, love-sick, melincoliny, ect. But we will never tell that to anyone too look like we're strong.

Women usally say that they like a guy who crys, but women also say that the want to feel safe next to a guy, now my question to all women is; Would you feel safe with a guy who crys and sobs?

Not all expressions of emotion are hidden. Expressions of happiness, joy, and joking around are not suppressed. However, there are limits to the amounts of these that can be tolerated by others. That is true of expressions of emotions for both boys and girls. However, other emotions are dealt with rather severely by their peers or parents. Anger is a tough one for boys and it gets them in lots of trouble if they don't learn how to control their anger. Expressions of sadness are the least tolerated of the emotions that boys express when they are younger. As boys grow up with other boys they are told in many ways that expressing their sadness is not good. If a boy starts to cry after some bad outcome other boys will either make fun of them or will avoid them. After awhile the boy that expresses himself by crying will not have many friends and may be labelled a sissy or mama's boy. Even parents of boys may be less sympathetic with their boy child when the child is hurt. Some parents don't want a sissy for a boy. Others don't even realise that they are doing it but subconsciously they may fear turning their boy into a sissy. This intolerance to expressions of sadness can in some boys make them less willing to share any of their emotions. They don't want to be labelled as a sissy or mama's boy and so they repress their emotions.

Because boys will be boys, and they think if they show their emotion it will make them a weak man with no dignity. I had deal with my husband for not having this feelings for 20 odd years until I found out that he have one and more but not with me, with the woman he met on a dating site.

Why do girls not like to work on cars? This question is just to point out the differences between the male and female. Guys think of things to do and to build. Girls think of relationships and feelings. Different chemistry.

While I partly agree, this is because men don't express their emotions and aren't as in tune with them as females. We get angry but we don't like to cry or show we actually care because of the way we are socialized even though we do. This mainly applies to us more traditional and masculine types. If a man likes a woman, he'll probably wait for the right time to tell her if she is actually single and probably ask her out on a date or something to get to know them better and hopefully establish a relationship. However, there are many complications because a guy could like a woman already in a relationship or they may never ask them out due to not wanting to sabotage an existing relationship or because they have a friend who is interested in that person they like so they blank those emotions. There are many reasons for this. One common one is that like anybody man or woman, they may have had a past relationship where they were mistreated and thus create a defense mechanism that keeps them from ever opening up until they feel that person has gained their love and trust. Another common one is that they aren't the type that ask women out on dates possibly because they find "dates" uncomfortable or they could even be insecure about what they are supposed to do.
