Why do hamsters bite their owners?

Beacuse it is scared and trying to defend its self. an example (this happend to me): The hamster just wakes up. You stick your finger in its cage (its "territory").Hamster bites finger because it is frightened and it's trying to defend its home. i guess that is a no given.... how would you like to have a giant finger in your house... creepy...

It is usually because they want their teeth to be stronger or trying to escape.

If you have a bar cage and your hamster is frequently biting it, your hamster may be telling you it wants a larger space.

First of all, get a wheel if you don't have one. This is the most important thing for a hamster. (Except for food and water)

Play with the hamster using your hands and arms once in a while. Take him out of the cage and let him run around on your hand.

Get those big brown, hard (that's what she said) pellets so your hamster can gnaw on those. Like the above poster said, he may want to make his teeth stronger, or shorten them down. Like rabbits, hamsters teeth are evergrowing and the only way to stop them from destroying their mouth is to eat plenty of hard food.

Also look into nibble sticks and things. they even make little hamster houses that can be chewed. anything you can add is great. they love variety and getting new things, fresh veggies are a good idea too (Carrots, celery etc).

If he isn't tame already, then that is defiantly the problem.

If your hamster continues to bite the cage after doing all these things then get a larger, possibly glass cage.

I have a pretty big aquarium tank I use for my hamster and he now stops biting on everything.

If you can't afford a big cage or the problem persists, then you can buy some horrible tasting apple spray from many pet stores. You just spray it on the cage and when your hamster bites it, he'll taste a horrible apple solution.

However I don't recommend that.

It's not really that humane.

Dont worry.. i have had my hamster for a year now and ever since we got her home she chewd the bars. If anything, its more dangerous for them not to chew as their teeth can get too long.. if your hamster is in pain with its teeth.. it wont chew it and wouldn't even attempt to eat food.. If your that worried you could buy a plastic cage with no bars for it too chew.

As rodents, hamsters will gnaw things to keep their teeth short. You can give the hamster things to chew on, but some just prefer to bite the bars, not a lot you can do to stop it, nor will it harm the hamster.
