Animals depend upon plants to produce oxygen (photosynthesis), to absorb carbon dioxide (plant respiration), and as a food source. Even animals that eat other animals (carnivores) depend on plants as a food source, as that is likely what their prey eat to survive.
Why when trees are cut down less animals survive?
Because with the removal of trees the homes of these animals are essentially destroyed. Many animals live in trees, and even if they don't the animals down on the ground can depend on the tree dwellers directly or indirectly.
