they oppose it because Christopher Columbus really did not discover America it was the native Americans and he ordered the native Americans to get him gold or he would kill them and he did. now should we really celebrate Columbus day

∙ 6y agoColumbus was a rather incompetent explorer, a slave trader, forced most of the people he met to bring him gold and pearls even when they had none, etc.
When he did encounter South America he was too sick to go ashore himself and based on the reports from his crew that he sent ashore, he decided he must have found the Garden of Eden.
He landed in what is now Panama near the entrance of the current Panama Canal, but when told how close he was to "great waters" over the mountains decided not to investigate.
To his dying day did not believe he had found any new lands, but was somewhere off the mainland of India or China.
The queen of Spain had to explicitly forbid bringing back any slaves on his 4th and final voyage, she was appalled by his actions!

∙ 7y agoFoolish people who believe that history of 1492 needs to be rewritten should have more important current events to be concerned about. Those opposing Columbus day believe he ushered in the evils of Europe to the New World. Based on their ideology, the state of Ohio may be asked to change the name of their capital city.
