The mudslides occur mainly because of 3 reasons:
1. The mountains are relatively new mountains and they are still rising from the ground and becoming steeper. The ground gets steeper and steeper over the years until the mud becomes too heavy to just sit there and it slides down the hill creating a mudslide.
2. Some of the mountains in Peru are over 3000 meters above sea level. As the air thins out at these higher altitudes the Eco system cannot support the growth of large trees that are needed to help maintain the grounds stability. The lack of large root systems in the soil adds to the instability of the soil and increases the chance of mudslides.
3 The area around Peru has a high rainfall. The rain wets the soil making it heavy. The rain also acts as a lubricant and reduces the friction in the soil making it easier for the ground to slide down the hill.
