Mutations occur because there are many things that can cause random changes in the nucleotides of the DNA or RNA: e.g. radioactivity, UV light, free radicals, accidental copying errors. Eukaryotic organisms have a variety of repair mechanisms to correct these random errors, but even those repair mechanisms are not perfect and sometimes mutate a mutation accidentally instead of repairing it. Nothing is perfect.
Mutation occurs when the DNA in the gonads or gametes of a given organism is altered by radiation, or by mutagenic chemicals, or by any other process.
The main reasons are:
Errors by DNA polymerase during replication
Chemical mutagens
Radiation
A change in the base sequence in DNA.
Mutations that occur at a single point in the DNA sequence are Point Mutations.
Variation occurs because of mutations in the genetic code.Mutaions occur when one of the nitrogen bases are in the wrong spot like if aa is next to each other in the wrong sequence then the mutations occur
Evolution is incredibly slow because: - Changes can only occur in each successive generation - Helpful mutations occur only rarely - Situations where different adaptations are necessary are rare
Mutations happen in ALL living things (and also in viruses)!!!!!!
Gametic mutations occur in the cells of the gonads (which produce sperm and eggs) and may be inherited. There are two types of mutations that can occur in gamete cells: 1. Gene Mutations 2. Chromosomal Mutations
errors in DNA replication
Mutations that occur at random are called spontaneous mutations.
Mutations that occur at a single point in the DNA sequence are Point Mutations.
Chromosome mutations occur during nuclear division because when the sequence of nucleotides are being placed substitutions, and frameshifts can occur, causing mutations. Substitution is when one nucleotide replaces another and frameshift mutation is when a nucleotide deletes, causing codons to be incorrectly read.
cannot be passed on to offspring

Such mutations are called point mutation or gene mutation.
Successful mutations will persist. Mutations usually occur during replication. Some mutations will flourish depending on environmental factors.
