Why do older men freak out when they think a younger girl has a crush on them?

I believe it is an involuntary reflex that, when it is working, protects both the girl and the older man.
The "freak out" sensation is a type of warning not to attempt to explore that crush and to be gentle and respectful of the little girls feelings. It will signals to the man, "Don't even try to make something more of it. Let it be innocent and pure."Besides, if she is younger and he is older, the responsibility to properly guide and take care of someone falls to the older person. We would hope the older man or woman would be mature enough to see the situation for what it is.
The consequences of that reflex not working is to increase the chance of that man seeing that young girl as an "easy target" for his appetites. That will increase the chances of molestation and worse.
Also, with so many pedophiles and other unsavory types out there trying to lure young girls into their traps, it has been generally assumed that the man may have done something to instigate it.
So that "freak out" does a lot to protect the society, the man and the girl.
