Any kind of tree with a hole in it
(sry that's wrong)
in fact most owls don't live in tree holes, many make nest, live in burrows, cactuses, grass balls on the ground, and burrows in snow. but for trees many different ones depending on species and subspecies but many don't care,
Owls can live in many places. Owls can find their home in tree holes, tree trunks, farms, bushes, forests, and in barns.
The Barn and Short-Eared owls live in the southen states from the east coast to the west coast, and also in Mexico. Their nests are in trees, barns and caves. The Flammulated, Northern Pygmy, Western-Screech and Whiskered-Screech owls live in the western U.S. states, and as far north as the southern part of Canada, and as far south as Mexico. Their nests tend to be more in abandoned wood pecker holes. The Eastern Screech and Northern Saw-Whetowls live in the lower central to east coast states. Their nests are quite often in wood duck boxes or flickers. The Great Horned, Long Eared and Great Gray owls live in all of the U.S. and in most of Canada. Their nests are the abondoned nests of larger birds, as well as large bird nest boxes. The Burrowing owl lives in the south western part of the U.S. Their nests are often man made nesting boxes.
owls may nest in any species of tree, it depends on the species. Barred owls will nest in a variety of wooded habitats, the spotted owl nests in old growth forests and borrowing owls don't nest in trees at all but burrows underground.

Owls can be found all over the world, but I'm not sure about the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Maybe Snowy owls live there. It all depends on which owl you are trying to find. For example, if you were trying to find the Burrowing owl, you should look in the Southwestern region of the United States and Northern Mexico. Or if you were trying to find the Eastern Screech owl, you should search the Southeastern U.S. There is a totally cool website called The Owl Pages.com where you can look because it has everythingon owls.
