Why do Arctic penguins need ice?

Not all penguins need the cold. There are Galapagos and African penguins that live on beaches that couldn't live in the Arctic. Just like Arctic penguins couldn't live on a beach. It's all about adaptation over a number of years. Animals change their characteristics to fit their surroundings so they can survive. Like a chameleon changes colors to fit their habitats

There are no penguins in the Arctic. The clasic penguins photos are associated with the Antarctic although they live in South America and Australia as well. Neither of these locations has ice.

In the Arctic and its associated regions auks and puffins fll a similar ecologiacal niche as penguins.

Penguins need water because they can't fly. Most birds get food by flying, but penguins; bodies weren't developed for flying. Therefore, they got their food from the water.
