Big Ben is a bell in the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster - but the name is often used for the clock, the tower or the building. The building is a very familiar landmark which houses the UK parliament.

The clock and the bell (part of the hourly clock chimes) are also famous as symbols of accurate time. The clock chimes have been used on television and radio as time signals, although this use has almost ceased now.

Big Ben is part of the Houses of Parliament, where the British legislative assembly meets. The original Houses were burnt down by fire in the 19th century, and architects worked hard to design an iconic building. Clock Towers were important in a time when most people couldn't afford watches, so important buildings often had them.

Big Ben was built because the Palace of Westminister had a fire and was mostly destroyed. Charles Barry's design for a new palace after the fire included the structure. It was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in honor of Queen Elizabeth.

Big Ben's clocktower was built and given to the people of London when the Palace of Westminster was rebuilt after the 1834 fire which destroyed the old building.

In those days it was important for city workers and employers to be able to hear the bells ringing as watches and clocks were not very common.
