Astigmatism occurs when the eye is shaped like a Rugby ball instead of a football, meaning it has one meridian that is steeper than the other. This is why you have 2 parts to your prescription.
It is a very common problem and does not mean your eye is messed up. The vast majority of people have some degree of astigmatism and it can easily be corrected by glasses or contact lenses.
