He paved a way for ending slavery. Slavery had been going on for a long time and no one had done anything about it. Then, Abraham Lincoln comes along, writes the Emancipation Proclamation, and this opened up the idea that slaves should be freed. soon after Abraham dies however, the thirteenth amendment was created that ended slavery.
Hello i am a different person, to put it in a detailed way, Lincoln was against slavery but for most of his life he was a member of the WHIG party but then became a republican and then became president when he came up with the proclamation the southern states went against him and the civil war began, Lincoln only intended for the war to last 3 months but it carried on for 4 years. finally when the war ended a week after that Lincoln was at Fords theatre watching a play when John Wilkes Booth shot him on the back of his head, Lincoln died a few hours later, and many mourned for his death.
I'm yet somebody different!
What a bunch of shortsighted answers. Since the history books love to depict "honest Abe" as the greatest president in our history, I forgive your ignorance. The fact is, the North was industrialized, while the South depended upon agriculture. A few quick facts:
1. Lincoln imposed a tariff upon the entire union for exports that was unfair to the South who depended upon exporting its cotton as its chief crop.
2. The South succeeded the Union because of this economic oppression.
3. Instead of just letting it lie, Lincoln waged war on the South for its succession of the union, NOT FOR SLAVERY! Slavery was a great moral reason that he adopted later. He even allowed Maryland, and other border states to "continue" to own slaves THROUGHOUT the war, since they had not succeeded the union. If slavery was a moral issue, certainly he would not have condoned this.
4. The black soldiers of the north were not paid the same as the white soldiers of the North.
5. Lincoln had said many times that blacks were not equal with whites, in his speeches.
6. He waged a civil war the killed over 600K Americans in 4 years and ultimately led to his own assassination, all IN THE NAME OF UNITY! What a guy.
7. Upon the end of the war Honest Abe had said the "Negros" should be deported, that they did not belong in America. With a great hero like this who needs a villain?
So, before you praise this icon of a president, take a moment to realize how many men died needlessly under the warmongering tyrant. He could simply have allowed the South to succeed. As for Slavery? The cotton gin had already been invented prior to the civil war. Why pay to feed slaves, who could revolt and kill you and your family, when a simple machine could do this work for you? Slavery was over anyway. This war was about Lincoln's EGO and nothing more.
Because he knew how to correctly form sentences, he freed slaves to end bickering, and he wore a big hat.
he wanted to end slavery once and for all because that he believed America should be a free country.....
because he helped stop slavery
