Before i answer let me explain my background a little bit and answering at the same time with a sotry. So please have the patience to read it slow and calmly. This will take a while. But don't worry, this is a true story and you will love this story.

I am a Chinese boy who lives in Malaysia who leads a normal life just like everyone. However, i have a slight problem in my life or in my culture. That is, I cant speak "CHINESE" nor any other dialects. Not even a sentence nor a word of it. I was born in an English speaking family so I had to speak English all the time only and since Malay is compulsory in my country, i only learnt 2 languages.

At first when i tried making friends, it was really difficult because everybody (students aka classmates) in my school cant really understand a word i am trying to tell them and the only language they were really good at were Chinese. So in reverse, i don't understand a word they say to me when we were having conversation.

Yes, life was harsh for me and it wasn't pretty back when i was in primary school as well as in secondary school. I got no friends until at the age of 13 as in literally no friend (0 friend) and was often bullied and were called "BANANA or Ah Mo Kia ( white child )". I don't know what you all think but to me, calling people BANANA or ah mo kia is the same as calling the black people or africans or any dark skin people you see, "Nigro" or calling people in Australia, "refugee".

Anyway, until at the age of 16 i was really desperate and kept wondering,"WHY ON EARTH I CANT GET ALONG WITH PEOPLE OF MY OWN KIND!!!". Then one day, i went to Japan with some other students from other states and countries. When we gathered, it was surprising that i can speak to them and made friend with them all more easily and have better relationship with the one i had back in my hometown.

The people whom i am friends were not my skin but were Malays aka Muslims, Indians, Pakistans, Koreans and Caucasians. And then it hit me! It made me realize why we can get along pretty well. It was because we were able to speak the same language that we can understand each other.

Eventhough i tried to put on my best behaviour and politeness when trying to mix with the Chinese people, but i couldn't get along with them. Its like they were against me but the way they goes against me was the same thing as being racist. This feeling hurts a lot and that is why i understand the pain almost like the rest of other races.

The same thing happen when i was in Japan for homestay and i had no idea of how to speak Japanese with my foster family especially my foster siblings. They were frighten of me and couldn't even speak a word of English with me. When they see me, they would go up to their room and talk to each other alone in privacy. The same feeling i had when i was in Malaysia when together with Chinese speaking people.

Then i decided to pick up Chinese which i wasnt able to have the chance and took me about a year to start a conversation in Chinese with Chinese people from China, Hong Kong, Macau and Guang Zhou. I was and am still not very good in speaking Chinese so it is a broken Chinese but when i tried speaking Chinese to them. They laughed as well as understood me and were much much more friendlier with me than before including the people in my school back then.

In conclusion, the reason why some races couldn't get along well with other races is because of COMMUNICATION. Understanding one and another is a way to improve a relationship and deepen the bond despite the colour of the skin because once we start laughing, that is the start of a new friendship or relationship. Because without understanding what they are saying, you will most likely to feel bored and tired and soon feel yourself being racist to other races or your own kind (if you don't know your own mother tongue).

Reason - Communication

Trouble getting along with different people?

Be patient and tolerant. We are not all alike and need to be careful in how we view and respond to others. Remember, to people who are different from us, we are also different to them. How would you feel if these "different" people said they had trouble getting along with you just because you were "different" to them?
