Niccolo Machiavelli's "The Prince", written in 1532, is in essence a leadership manual. It consists of advice on how to gain and maintain power.
The precepts set out by Machiavelli are not restricted to the time they were written - they are instructions on dealing with people and organisations - and they are as relevant to a modern captain of industry as they were to a renaissance lord.

Machiavelli is famous for writing "The Prince," a book about how to be the best possible leader. In the book, Machiavelli pretty much says that in order to be a successful prince, or in The Godfather's case a mob boss, you must not let your morals or personal life get in the way of your decision making. It gets deeper than that and you really have to read the book to get the idea. The Godfather is a good prince according to Machiavelli, because he doesn't let family get in the way of business, and he doesn't base his decisions on morals; "It's just business."
