I believe Shakespeare is still studied at schools because he was such an influence to many and has demonstrated many morals through his plays. His work is also present in everyday life, being the storyline of many modern day movies and books.
1. His plays are about universal human problems and so can be modernised and brought up to date and still make sense (e.g. the 1996 Romeo + Juliet movie)
2. Shakespeare uses the English language in an amazingly effective and beautiful way.
Because if you study it well, you will get the sense that what he wrote about is very relevant today...that is why modern interpretations, in modern clothes are so popular. Also you will discover that he invented many words and phrases that are in use today...too man to mention all, but "All the worlds a stage " is but one. Google Shakespeares words and you will be amazed
Because school students should be exposed to what is the best in literature. And Shakespeare is the greatest dramatist who ever lived. To limit yourself to what has been created in the last year or two is to limit yourself for the most part to the mediocre.
